Part 2 model answer
The longest traffic jam I've ever been stuck in happened two years ago, on my way back to Dhaka after Eid-ul-Adha. I was travelling by bus from our village in Tangail with my parents and my younger sister.
Normally, the journey takes about three hours, but that day it took us almost eleven hours. Just after we crossed the Bangabandhu Bridge area, the traffic completely stopped. Thousands of buses, trucks, and private cars were stuck on the highway, all heading back to Dhaka at the same time after the holidays. On top of that, there were lots of cattle trucks, and a couple of vehicles had broken down in the middle of the road, which made things even worse.
At first, we just waited patiently, thinking it would clear up soon. But hours passed, and the bus barely moved. To pass the time, I listened to podcasts and played word games on my phone with my sister. When the bus stopped for a long time, some passengers got off and walked around. Local vendors were walking between the vehicles selling water, cucumbers, and snacks, and we bought some to keep ourselves going. Eventually, my phone battery died, so I just stared out of the window and chatted with my parents.
Honestly, it was exhausting and frustrating. It was really hot inside the bus, and my mother started feeling unwell after a while. I also felt really bad for the elderly passengers and small children. But looking back, it taught me a lesson. Now, I always try to travel a day or two earlier or later than everyone else, and I make sure to carry a power bank, water, and some snacks.
Part 3 discussion
What are the main causes of traffic jams in cities?
The main causes are the huge number of vehicles and poor road infrastructure. In cities like Dhaka, many drivers don't follow traffic rules, and vehicles often park on the roads. Construction work and the lack of proper public transport make things worse. Also, there are too many different types of vehicles, like rickshaws, buses, and cars, all sharing the same roads.
How do traffic jams affect people's lives?
Traffic jams waste a huge amount of people's time, which could be used for work, study, or family. They also cause stress, frustration, and fatigue. Economically, they lead to losses, as goods and workers are delayed. In emergencies, traffic jams can even be life-threatening, for example when ambulances get stuck.
Should people be encouraged to use public transport instead of private cars?
Yes, definitely. If more people used public transport, there would be fewer cars on the road, which would reduce traffic and pollution. But for this to work, public transport needs to be comfortable, safe, and reliable. Many people avoid buses because they're overcrowded and unpleasant, so improvements are essential.
Why do so many people travel at the same time during holidays?
In Bangladesh, most people working in cities have their roots in villages, so during big festivals like Eid, they all go home to celebrate with their families. Since holidays are fixed for everyone, they all travel at the same time. Unfortunately, the transport system isn't designed to handle such a huge number of people at once.
What can be done to reduce traffic during festival seasons?
The government could extend holidays or give them in phases so that people don't all travel on the same day. More special trains and buses could be arranged. Better road management, like controlling truck movement and quickly removing broken-down vehicles, would also help. Encouraging online ticketing could reduce crowding at stations too.
