Part 2 model answer
The book I'd like to talk about is "Animal Farm" by George Orwell. I read it about a year ago, mainly because my IELTS teacher recommended it. She said it was short, written in simple English, and a great way to improve reading skills.
The story is set on a farm in England, where the animals are treated badly by their owner, a farmer called Mr. Jones. One day, they rebel, chase him away, and take control of the farm themselves. At first, everything seems wonderful. The animals create rules to make sure everyone is treated equally, and they all work together happily. But gradually, the pigs, who are the cleverest animals, start taking more power for themselves. Their leader, a pig named Napoleon, becomes more and more like a dictator. He changes the rules secretly, punishes anyone who disagrees, and by the end, the pigs are living exactly like the humans they had overthrown.
At first glance, it seems like a simple children's story about talking animals. But actually, it's a political allegory about how power can corrupt people, and it's based on events in Soviet Russia.
I found the book really thought-provoking. Honestly, I felt quite sad and frustrated, especially for a hardworking horse called Boxer, who trusts the leaders completely and ends up being treated very cruelly. The book made me think about how easily people can be manipulated by those in power if they don't question things. What I liked most was how Orwell explained such a serious message in such a simple way. It's definitely a book I'd recommend to anyone.
Part 3 discussion
Why do many children's stories include animals?
Children naturally love animals, so stories with animals immediately grab their attention. Animals can also be used to teach moral lessons in a simple and fun way, like being kind or honest. Since animals aren't real people, children can understand difficult ideas without feeling uncomfortable. For example, stories like "The Lion and the Mouse" teach valuable lessons very effectively.
Do adults also enjoy stories about animals?
Yes, many adults do. Some animal stories, like "Animal Farm" or "Life of Pi", have deep meanings that are actually aimed at adults. Adults also enjoy wildlife documentaries and films with animal characters. Animal stories can be emotional and relaxing at the same time, which makes them appealing to people of all ages.
Is reading less popular among young people today?
I think reading physical books has become less popular, because young people spend more time on social media, videos, and games. However, many still read, but in different forms, like e-books, online articles, and web novels. So reading hasn't disappeared, but the way people read has definitely changed.
What are the benefits of reading stories for children?
Reading stories improves children's vocabulary, imagination, and concentration. It also helps them understand emotions and see the world from other people's perspectives. Stories often teach important values, like honesty and kindness. On top of that, parents reading to children can strengthen the bond between them.
Should books be adapted into films?
I think it can be a good idea, because films can introduce a story to a much wider audience, including people who don't usually read. A good adaptation might even encourage people to read the original book. However, films often leave out important details, so many readers feel the book is better. Ideally, people should experience both.
