Part 2 model answer
A time I worked in a group that I still remember clearly was during my HSC years, when we had to complete a science project for a college science fair. There were four of us in the group, three classmates and me.
Our project was a small model showing how rainwater harvesting works, which is actually a really useful idea for a country like Bangladesh, where some areas face water shortages while others suffer from flooding. We wanted to show how rainwater could be collected from rooftops, filtered, and stored for daily use.
We divided the work according to each person's strengths. One friend, who was great at drawing, designed the layout of the model. Another friend was good at handling tools, so he built the structure using cardboard, plastic pipes, and small bottles. The third member did most of the research and wrote the information for our poster. My job was to prepare the presentation and explain the project to the judges, since I was the most confident speaker in the group. We met almost every afternoon for two weeks, usually at one friend's house.
Of course, it wasn't always smooth. At one point, we had a disagreement about the design, and our model also leaked badly during the first test. But we talked things through calmly and fixed the problems together.
Overall, I really enjoyed working in that group. It taught me the value of teamwork and how much more you can achieve when everyone contributes their own skills. And the best part was that our project won second prize at the fair, which made all the hard work feel completely worth it.
Part 3 discussion
What are the advantages of working in a group?
Working in a group allows people to share ideas and combine different skills, which often leads to better results. The workload is divided, so tasks can be completed faster. Group members can also support and motivate each other. In addition, group work helps people develop important social skills, like communication and cooperation.
What problems can happen when people work in groups?
One common problem is that some members don't contribute equally, while others end up doing most of the work. Disagreements and personality clashes can also slow things down. Sometimes, decision-making takes longer because everyone has different opinions. Poor communication can lead to confusion and mistakes as well.
Is it better to work alone or in a team?
It depends on the task and the person. For creative or complex projects, teamwork is usually better, since different perspectives can improve the result. However, working alone can be more efficient for simple tasks, and some people concentrate better on their own. Ideally, people should be able to do both.
What makes a good team leader?
A good team leader should communicate clearly and make sure everyone understands their role. They should also listen to team members' ideas and treat everyone fairly. Being able to solve conflicts and make decisions under pressure is very important. Most importantly, a good leader motivates the team and leads by example.
Should schools give students more group projects?
Yes, I think so. Group projects help students develop teamwork and communication skills, which are essential in the workplace. They also teach students how to deal with different personalities and resolve disagreements. However, teachers should make sure each student's contribution is fairly assessed, so that hardworking students aren't disadvantaged.
