Part 2 model answer
The person I'd like to talk about is my uncle, Mr. Kamal, who is my mother's elder brother. He owns a well-known bakery and sweet shop business in Narayanganj, which now has four branches.
His business sells a wide range of products, like traditional Bangladeshi sweets, such as roshogolla and chomchom, as well as cakes, biscuits, and fresh bread. During Eid and other festivals, his shops are always packed with customers, and sometimes people even have to wait in long queues.
What makes his story inspiring is how humbly he started. About twenty years ago, he lost his job at a garment factory and had no idea what to do next. His wife was very good at making sweets at home, so they decided to start selling them to neighbours. At first, he carried the sweets in boxes and went door to door. Slowly, people started to love the taste and began placing regular orders. After a few years, he saved enough money to rent a tiny shop, and from there, the business gradually expanded.
I think his business is successful for several reasons. First, he never compromises on quality. He still uses fresh ingredients and checks the products himself every morning. Second, he treats his customers and staff with real respect, so people keep coming back, and his employees have stayed with him for years. Third, he's always willing to adapt. For example, a few years ago, he started taking orders through Facebook and offering home delivery, which boosted his sales a lot. Above all, his hard work and honesty have built a strong reputation, which is something money alone can't buy.
Part 3 discussion
What qualities do successful businesspeople have?
Successful businesspeople are usually hardworking, determined, and willing to take risks. They have a clear vision and good decision-making skills. Being honest and building trust with customers is also essential. In addition, they're able to adapt quickly to changes in the market and learn from their mistakes.
Is it better to start your own business or work for a company?
Both have advantages and disadvantages. Starting your own business gives you freedom and the chance to earn more, but it's risky and stressful. Working for a company offers a stable salary and fewer worries, but less independence. I think it depends on a person's personality, financial situation, and willingness to take risks.
Why do many small businesses fail?
Many small businesses fail because of a lack of money, poor planning, or not understanding their customers' needs. Strong competition from big companies is another challenge. Some owners also lack business skills, like managing finances or marketing. In addition, unexpected events, like economic crises or the pandemic, can force businesses to close.
How has the internet changed the way people do business?
The internet has completely transformed business. Now, even small businesses can sell their products online and reach customers across the country or even worldwide. Social media has become a powerful and cheap marketing tool. Digital payments have also made transactions much faster and easier. As a result, starting a business has become more accessible than ever.
Should the government support small businesses?
Yes, definitely. Small businesses create jobs and contribute a lot to the economy. The government can help by offering low-interest loans, reducing taxes for new businesses, and providing training programmes. Simplifying the process of registering a business would also encourage more people, especially young people and women, to become entrepreneurs.
