Part 2 model answer
A decision I changed that turned out to be really important was about my higher studies. This happened around three years ago, right after I finished my HSC exams.
At first, I had decided to study engineering. Most of my relatives and friends were going for it, and in our society, engineering and medicine are often seen as the most respectable choices. So, without thinking much, I started preparing for the engineering admission tests and even joined an expensive coaching centre.
But after a couple of months, I began to realise that my heart wasn't really in it. I was struggling with advanced physics and maths, and honestly, I felt bored and stressed most of the time. Meanwhile, I was spending my free time learning English, designing, and working on small online projects, which I genuinely enjoyed. One evening, I had a long talk with my elder cousin, and he asked me a simple question: "Do you want this, or do other people want this for you?" That question really made me think.
So I changed my decision and chose to focus on English and digital skills instead, which is also why I'm preparing for IELTS now. At first, I felt quite nervous and guilty, especially because my parents had already spent money on coaching, and some relatives weren't happy about it. But now, I feel it was absolutely the right choice. I'm much more motivated, and I'm actually building things I care about. It taught me that it's better to change direction early than to spend years doing something you don't love.
Part 3 discussion
Why do people sometimes change their decisions?
Usually because they get new information or their situation changes. Sometimes people realise their first decision was made too quickly or under pressure from others. Personal growth also plays a part, as people's goals and priorities naturally change over time.
Is it a sign of weakness to change your mind?
Not at all. In fact, I think it shows maturity and flexibility. Sticking to a wrong decision just to look strong can lead to bigger problems. Of course, if someone changes their mind constantly, it might show indecisiveness, but sensible changes are a good thing.
Who do young people usually ask for advice when making decisions?
In Bangladesh, most young people turn to their parents first, especially for big decisions like education or marriage. Friends and elder siblings are also common sources of advice. Nowadays, many young people also search online or watch videos from experts and influencers.
Should parents make important decisions for their children?
For young children, yes, because they don't have enough experience. But for older teenagers and adults, parents should guide rather than decide. Choices like career or study subjects should ultimately be made by the young person, because they're the ones who have to live with the results.
What factors should people consider before making an important decision?
They should think about their long-term goals, the possible risks and benefits, and how the decision will affect their family and finances. It's also wise to gather information and seek advice from experienced people. And finally, they should listen to their own interests and feelings, not just others' expectations.
