Part 2 model answer
A piece of local news that recently caught everyone's attention in my area was about a sharp rise in dengue cases in our neighbourhood. I first heard about it around two months ago, during the peak of the rainy season.
I actually came across it on a local Facebook group for residents of our area. Someone had shared a news report from a Bangla newspaper saying that several people from our ward had been admitted to hospital with dengue fever within just one week. Soon after that, the news was everywhere. People were discussing it at tea stalls, in the mosque after prayers, and even in our building's WhatsApp group.
The report explained that stagnant water in construction sites, blocked drains, and even flower pots on balconies had become breeding grounds for mosquitoes. It also mentioned that the city corporation was planning to spray insecticide and run awareness campaigns in the area.
I think people were so interested in this news because it directly affected their health and safety. Dengue can be really dangerous, and almost everyone knew someone who had caught it. Parents were especially worried about their children. The news also made people take action. In our building, for example, we organised a small clean-up, emptied water from old containers, and asked the guards to keep the drains clear. So it wasn't just news to read and forget; it actual
Part 3 discussion
What kinds of local news are people most interested in?
People are usually most interested in news that directly affects their daily lives, such as road construction, traffic changes, power cuts, or price increases at local markets. Crime and safety news also attract a lot of attention. Health issues, like disease outbreaks, quickly become popular topics too. In general, the closer the news is to people's homes, the more they care about it.
How do people usually get local news nowadays?
These days, most people get local news from social media, especially Facebook groups and pages run by local residents. Online newspapers and news apps are also popular. Older people still rely on TV and printed newspapers, while word of mouth remains common in smaller communities. Social media has definitely made local news spread much faster than before.
Is local news more important than international news?
For everyday life, I think local news is more important, because it affects people directly, like changes in transport or local safety issues. However, international news matters too, since global events such as wars or economic crises can affect prices and jobs at home. So ideally, people should follow both to have a complete picture.
Can we trust the news we read on social media?
Not always. Social media is full of rumours, fake news, and misleading posts, because anyone can share anything without checking facts. Sometimes, false information spreads faster than the truth. That's why people should verify news from reliable sources, like established newspapers or official websites, before believing or sharing it.
Should local newspapers be supported by the government?
I think some support would be helpful, because many local newspapers are struggling financially as more people move online. They play an important role in informing communities and highlighting local problems. However, government support should not come with control over what they publish. Otherwise, the newspapers might lose their independence and credibility.
