Part 2 model answer
An interesting video I watched recently was about how ordinary wooden pencils are made in a factory. I came across it on YouTube about two months ago, late one evening, while I was lying in bed with my phone.
To be honest, I didn't expect much when I clicked on it. I was just scrolling, and the thumbnail looked kind of random. But within the first minute, I was completely hooked. Later, I even showed it to my younger brother, and he found it just as fascinating as I did.
The video showed the whole process step by step. First, large blocks of wood, usually cedar, are cut into thin slats. Then, machines carve small grooves into these slats, and the graphite "lead" is placed inside. Interestingly, the lead isn't actually lead at all; it's a mixture of graphite and clay, baked at a very high temperature. After that, another slat is glued on top, like a sandwich, and the whole thing is cut into individual pencils. Finally, they're painted several times, stamped with the brand name, and fitted with erasers.
I found it interesting for a few reasons. First, it made me realise how much work and precision go into something we use every day without even thinking about it. Second, the machines were so fast and accurate that it was almost satisfying to watch. And third, I learned something new, especially the fact that pencils don't contain any real lead. It also reminded me that even the simplest things around us can have a fascinating story behind them, if we're curious enough to look.
Part 3 discussion
What kinds of videos do people like to watch online?
People watch a huge variety of videos, but the most popular ones are usually entertainment, like comedy, music, and short funny clips. Educational and "how-to" videos are also very popular, as people learn practical skills from them. Many people enjoy vlogs, cooking videos, and product reviews. Recently, short videos on platforms like TikTok and YouTube Shorts have become extremely popular.
Why do some videos go viral?
Videos usually go viral when they trigger strong emotions, like laughter, surprise, or sympathy. Content that's short, unique, or relatable also tends to spread quickly. Timing matters too, as videos connected to trending topics get more attention. In addition, sharing by popular influencers can make a video viral almost overnight.
Do you think people learn more from videos than from books?
For practical skills, like cooking or fixing something, videos are often more effective because people can see exactly what to do. However, books usually provide deeper and more detailed knowledge. Reading also improves concentration and imagination. So I think videos are great for quick learning, but books are better for in-depth understanding.
Are there any dangers of watching too many online videos?
Yes, there are several. Watching too many videos can waste a lot of time and reduce productivity. It can also affect sleep and eyesight, especially when people watch late at night. Another danger is misinformation, as not all video content is accurate. Children, in particular, may be exposed to inappropriate content.
Should schools use videos in teaching?
Yes, I think videos can make lessons much more engaging and easier to understand, especially for complex topics in science or history. They can show real-life examples that textbooks can't. However, videos shouldn't replace teachers, but rather support them. A good balance between videos and interactive classroom activities works best.
