Part 2 model answer
A tall building I really like is the Burj Khalifa in Dubai. I haven't visited it in person yet, but I've seen it so many times in documentaries, photos, and videos sent by my relatives who work in the UAE, that I feel like I know it quite well.
The Burj Khalifa is located in downtown Dubai, and for many years, it has held the title of the tallest building in the world. It's around 828 metres high, with more than 160 floors. It was officially opened in 2010, and since then, it has become the symbol of Dubai.
In terms of design, it looks absolutely stunning. It's made mostly of glass and steel, and it gets narrower as it goes higher, almost like a giant silver needle pointing towards the sky. I read that its shape was actually inspired by a desert flower, which I found really interesting. At night, it's lit up with colourful lights, and on special occasions like New Year's Eve, there's a huge fireworks display around it, which millions of people watch online. There's also a famous dancing fountain right next to it.
There are a few reasons why I like it. First, it shows what human beings can achieve with creativity, engineering, and determination. Building something that tall in a hot desert climate must have been an incredible challenge. Second, it's not just tall; it's genuinely beautiful and elegant. And third, it has a personal connection for me, because one of my uncles works in Dubai, and he's promised to take me to the observation deck if I ever visit. Standing that high and looking down at the city is something I'd really love to experience one day.
Part 3 discussion
Why do cities build tall buildings?
The main reason is limited land, especially in crowded cities. Building upwards allows more people to live and work in a small area. Tall buildings also act as symbols of progress and wealth, which can attract investment and tourists. For example, iconic skyscrapers often become the most recognisable landmarks of a city.
What are the disadvantages of living in tall buildings?
Living in tall buildings can be risky during emergencies, like fires or earthquakes, because it's harder to escape quickly. People also depend heavily on lifts, which can be a problem during power cuts, especially in countries like Bangladesh. Some people feel isolated, as they rarely interact with neighbours. On top of that, flats in high-rise buildings can be very expensive.
Do you think tall buildings make a city more attractive?
They can, if they're well designed. Modern skyscrapers can give a city an impressive skyline and a sense of development. However, if too many tall buildings are built without proper planning, the city can feel crowded and lose its natural beauty and historical character. So it really depends on the design and planning.
Should there be limits on how tall buildings can be?
In some areas, yes. For example, near airports, height limits are necessary for safety. In historical areas, tall buildings can spoil the traditional look of the place. Also, in earthquake-prone regions, very tall buildings can be dangerous if they aren't built properly. So limits should depend on the location and safety standards.
Why do countries compete to build the tallest buildings?
Countries build the tallest buildings mainly to show off their economic power and technological achievements. These buildings bring international attention and attract tourists and businesses. They also become a matter of national pride. However, some people argue that the money could be better spent on things like healthcare or education.
