Part 2 model answer
An online program I really enjoy watching is "6 Minute English" by BBC Learning English. It's available on YouTube and as a podcast, and I've been following it regularly for about a year now.
I usually watch it three or four times a week, often in the morning while having breakfast, or sometimes during my bus journeys. Since each episode is only about six minutes long, it's really easy to fit into my daily routine, even on busy days.
Each episode features two presenters who have a natural conversation about an interesting topic. The topics are really varied. For example, I've watched episodes about why people love spicy food, whether robots will replace teachers, and how sleep affects memory. During the conversation, they introduce around six useful words or expressions related to the topic, and at the end, they review the meanings of all those words. They also ask a small quiz question at the beginning and reveal the answer at the end, which makes it quite fun.
There are several reasons why I like watching it. First, it's perfect for improving my English, especially vocabulary and listening skills, which are really important for IELTS. Second, the presenters speak clearly and naturally, so I can learn how real British English sounds in everyday conversation. Third, it's short and engaging, so I never get bored. And finally, I learn interesting facts about the world at the same time. Many of the words I've picked up from this program, I now use in my own speaking and writing. So for me, it's a fun way of learning without feeling like studying.
Part 3 discussion
What kinds of programs do young people like to watch?
Young people usually prefer entertainment content, like comedy videos, web series, music, and gaming streams. Many also follow vloggers and influencers on YouTube and TikTok. Some enjoy educational and motivational content, especially when preparing for exams. In general, they like short, fast-paced videos that they can watch on their phones.
Can watching TV or online programs be educational?
Absolutely. Documentaries, news programmes, and educational channels can teach people a lot about science, history, and current events. Many people also improve their language skills by watching shows in English. However, it depends on what people choose to watch, because a lot of online content is purely for entertainment.
Why are short videos becoming so popular?
Short videos are popular because they're quick, entertaining, and easy to watch anywhere, especially on smartphones. People's attention spans have also become shorter, so they prefer content that gets to the point fast. Platforms like TikTok and YouTube Shorts are designed to keep users scrolling. However, this can make it harder for people to focus on longer content.
Do you think online platforms will replace traditional TV?
In many ways, it's already happening, especially among young people. Online platforms offer more choice and flexibility, as people can watch whatever they want, whenever they want. However, traditional TV is still popular among older people and for live events like sports and news. So I think TV will survive, but its role will continue to shrink.
Should parents control what their children watch online?
Yes, definitely. The internet contains a lot of inappropriate content, including violence and misleading information, which can harm children. Parents can use parental controls and set time limits. More importantly, they should talk to their children and teach them how to choose suitable content, rather than just banning things.
