Part 2 model answer
The most special cake I've ever received was a homemade chocolate cake that my younger sister baked for my birthday last year.
What made it surprising was that she had never baked anything before. She's only fifteen, and usually she spends most of her free time studying or watching cartoons. But a couple of weeks before my birthday, she secretly started watching baking videos on YouTube. Since we don't have an oven at home, she found a recipe for making a cake in a pressure cooker, which is actually quite common in Bangladeshi households.
On the night of my birthday, just as the clock struck twelve, she came into my room with the cake, along with my parents, and they all started singing "Happy Birthday." The cake wasn't perfect at all. It was a bit uneven, slightly burnt at the bottom, and she had written my name on top with chocolate syrup, but some of the letters had melted and run into each other. Still, it honestly looked beautiful to me.
The reason it was so special is the effort and love behind it. She later told me that her first two attempts had failed completely, and she had used her own pocket money to buy the ingredients again. That really touched me. A cake from a bakery would have looked better, but it wouldn't have had the same meaning. Surprisingly, it tasted really good too, rich and soft in the middle. I even took a photo of it, which I still keep on my phone. Whenever I see that picture, it reminds me how lucky I am to have such a caring sister.
Part 3 discussion
Why do people often eat cake at celebrations?
Cake has become a symbol of celebration in many cultures, especially for birthdays and weddings. Cutting a cake together is a special moment that brings everyone together, and it's also a great opportunity for photos. Besides, most people simply love sweet food. In Bangladesh, cakes have become popular alongside traditional sweets like roshogolla and mishti doi.
Is it better to buy a cake or make one at home?
Buying a cake is more convenient, and bakery cakes usually look more professional. However, a homemade cake feels more personal and shows real effort. It's also often healthier, because you can control the ingredients, like using less sugar. So for close family members, I think a homemade cake is more meaningful.
Do people in your country eat more sweet food now than in the past?
I think so. In the past, sweets were mostly eaten during festivals or special occasions. Nowadays, cakes, pastries, chocolates, and soft drinks are available everywhere and are much more affordable. Many people consume sugar every day without realising it. Unfortunately, this has led to a rise in health problems like diabetes and obesity.
Why do people give food as a gift?
Food is something everyone needs and enjoys, so it's always a safe and welcome gift. In our culture, sharing food is a way of showing love, respect, and hospitality. For example, people often bring sweets when visiting relatives or sharing good news. Homemade food, in particular, shows care and effort.
Has the way people celebrate birthdays changed over time?
Yes, quite a lot. In the past, birthdays were simple, often with just family and a special meal at home. Now, many people celebrate in restaurants, decorate with balloons, and post everything on social media. Surprise parties at midnight have also become very popular among young people. Celebrations have generally become bigger and more expensive.
