Part 2 model answer
A program I watched recently and really enjoyed is "Planet Earth III", a nature documentary series made by the BBC and narrated by Sir David Attenborough. I watched it on my phone over a couple of weeks, usually at night before going to bed, one episode at a time.
I came across it because my IELTS teacher suggested watching documentaries to improve listening skills, since the narration is clear and uses a lot of rich vocabulary. So I thought I'd give it a try, and I ended up getting completely hooked.
Each episode focuses on a different environment, like oceans, deserts, forests, or even cities, and shows how animals survive there. The camera work is absolutely stunning. There were scenes I still remember clearly, like a group of orcas working together to hunt, and tiny animals surviving in extreme heat. But what made this series different from older nature documentaries was its strong focus on how human activity and climate change are affecting wildlife. Some parts were honestly quite sad, showing how certain species are struggling to survive because of habitat loss and pollution.
I felt a mix of amazement and concern while watching it. On one hand, I was amazed by how beautiful and intelligent animals can be. On the other hand, it made me realise how much damage we're causing to the planet. It wasn't just entertaining; it actually made me think more seriously about environmental issues. And as a bonus, my listening skills improved, and I picked up lots of useful words like "habitat", "endangered", and "biodiversity". So, overall, it was both educational and inspiring.
Part 3 discussion
What kinds of TV programs are popular in your country?
In Bangladesh, TV dramas and serials are very popular, especially among families. News channels and talk shows also attract a large audience, particularly older people. Sports, especially cricket matches, are hugely popular. During Eid, special dramas and entertainment programmes become the main attraction for almost everyone.
Do people prefer watching programs on TV or online now?
Young people definitely prefer watching online, on platforms like YouTube, Netflix, and local streaming services, because they can watch whatever they want, whenever they want. Older people still tend to watch traditional TV. However, even many older people are now using YouTube on their smartphones. So I think online viewing will continue to grow.
Are documentaries a good way to learn?
Yes, I think they're excellent. Documentaries combine visuals, sound, and storytelling, which makes information easier to understand and remember. They can show places and events that most people would never see in real life. However, viewers should be aware that some documentaries can be biased, so it's good to check facts from other sources too.
Should children's TV time be limited?
Yes, I believe it should. Too much screen time can affect children's eyesight, sleep, and physical activity. It can also reduce their time for studying, playing outside, and talking with family. However, educational programmes can be beneficial, so parents should focus not only on limiting time but also on choosing the right content.
How has TV influenced society?
TV has had a huge influence on society. It has made people more aware of news and events happening around the world. It also shapes trends in fashion, language, and lifestyle. On the negative side, some programmes promote unrealistic lifestyles or violence, which can influence viewers, especially young people, in harmful ways.
